Despite positive public interest and advanced ticket sales for the Wells Beer Festival, City of Wells Lions have been forced to cancel their fund-raising initiative on this occasion.

Naturally, we’re bitterly disappointed especially given time and effort made by members of the organising committee and the generosity of so many local companies in supporting our efforts.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for small charitable organisations to comply with the conditions set for public events. Public safety is paramount, something we have always taken seriously at the many events we have held over almost 45 years.

In this instance, we were encouraged to follow the lead set by a similar Lions event and contained in a 140-page form. Unfortunately, the objections raised to our submission, have meant that the event could not possibly raise money for chosen charities and so we have concluded that we have no option but to withdraw our application.

The additional administration and planning requirements certainly impact on the feasibility of public events, ie. Mayday and the Moat Boat Races and we will now have to consider the role we play in the future.

At a time when membership is growing perhaps now is the time to consider other ways to engage with and support the people of Wells and Mendip.

Advance ticket purchases for the Beer Festival will be refunded directly.
